Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents, however, did not want her to pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry acknowledged that she was not confident in her acting during high school. However, she began performing as a means to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness caused Perry back to California and theater roles were available. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie alongside her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. Perry was a regular character in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. She also played the older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, which is a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. She was cast in the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
